About On Edge
Now in its 9th year, On Edge Contemporary Media + Performance festival is an annual program of contemporary arts which strives to produce a Nationally and Internationally relevant program of independent new work, that traverses the various disciplines of performance, sound, screen, new media and installation.
On Edge is produced by independent artist and producer Nicholas Mills, and is generally presented across a variety of venues and locations in Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. In 2014, the program will be focused at Arthouse.
Nicholas also runs the independent artist run space, Arthouse; he curates the ongoing Mixed Grill series, and programs the new music night In/Off Club, and various one off events. Arthouse supports contemporary culture in all its forms, including contemporary new music, visual media, sound art, contemporary dance and performance, film and screen culture, new media and multi-arts practice, circus and caberat, documentary theatre and youth arts.
Far North Queensland is a diverse and curious landscape in which to present, practice and produce contemporary media and performance.....discreet audiences and a modest community of practitioners, and almost 2000km's from the nearest capital city.
Yet On Edge, and Arthouse, continue to facilitate the development of new work, encourage young and emerging artists, develop new audiences, and build regional cutting edge practice into National contexts.
On Edge and Arthouse run on the 'smell of an oily rag'; independently fuelled and community aspirated, they have a distinctly 'deep north' focus.
